What is a good way to get more views for your site?

I've read that once you submit your site to Google that it takes them 2 or 3 weeks to actually have it on their search engines. And sometimes not even then. I guess that is the most important thing... how do you even get on Google? If this is true then I guess I just need to wait

some guy on a site was selling his website... ruevid.com and he had 2.7 million page views a month after only been up and running for 3 months. He said he advertised a lot and didn't pay much money, just lots of time. I'm wondering how you even do that. Is getting other website to link to yours as important as some websites say? Or is it simply getting more content on your site?

I'm guessing I just told myself the answer and that you need to do a mixture of all these things. But any small things would be a great help.
